What is Endodontic Treatment?

Endodontic therapy treats the inside of the tooth and is necessary when the tooth’s pulp becomes inflamed or infected. Causes of inflammation and infection include decay, trauma, or a crack or chip to the tooth. If left untreated, it can cause pain or lead to an abscess.
Also known as a “root canal,” endodontic treatment involves carefully cleaning and shaping the inside of the tooth, then filling and sealing the space. Afterwards, a crown or other restoration will be placed on the tooth to protect and restore it to full function. Note: An unrestored tooth is susceptible to fracture, so the restoration should be placed as soon as possible following the endodontic therapy.

What are the alternatives to endodontic treatment?
When the pulp of a tooth is damaged, the only other alternative to endodontic therapy is extraction. Once the tooth is extracted, the space must be filled with a bridge or an implant to restore chewing function and to prevent the surrounding teeth from shifting. These procedures tend to be much more costly than the endodontic treatment
